Nouns

I'm pretty sure that now, after living your life, going to college, maybe having some kids, you never stopped and asked yourself what nouns are. I gotta admit, it's not an everyday question, but have you ever truly wondered? And no, I'm not taking you down a philosophical route in which I tell you about how after my trip to Nepal, in which I lived amongst Buddhist monks for 90 days, where I realized that we  are nouns. Instead of going down philosophy lane (or weed-induced college drop out lane) we're taking the logical lane, the actual lane.

If you look up the word table in any dictionary, rest assured, it'll look something like this.
table definition

What a surprise, it's a noun! And of course it' a noun. We were shown in kindergarten that nouns are people, places and things. That there are common nouns, such as "table", and proper nouns, such as Abraham Lincoln; but that's not just it.

What do you say about the word shadoodle? It's a word, I promise. (Even though I just invented it.) But let me entertain you for a minute. What do you think it is?

A. noun
B. verb
C. adjective
D. adverb

Did you pick an answer? Lock it in!

Okay, so lets verify. I'll put shadoodle in a sentence and then you can tell me what it is.

  • Johnny put the shadoodle on backwards.

IT'S A NOUN! But do you know why?

It's because of the word the. If a word comes after an article it's a noun. This is true of words that we already know, or words we just made up.

It's as simple as that! So take on your shadoodle and wiggle on outta here with real knowledge about what nouns truly are.
